WHAT İS RUSTİC GREEN/SEAGRASS LIMESTONE: A TECHNICAL AND AESTHETIC APPROACH

A 20–25 Million-Year Journey from an Ancient Sea to Architecture

Before there was a quarry, before there was a factory, before the cities and landscapes of modern Türkiye existed as we know them today, there was a sea.

Approximately 20–25 million years ago, rich marine life inhabited the ancient waters that covered this region. Shells, organisms and calcium-rich sediments gradually accumulated on the seabed. Layer upon layer, generation after generation, these remnants of ancient life settled into the earth.

Time did the rest.

Over millions of years, the accumulated sediments were compacted and fused together through natural geological processes, gradually becoming the dense fossiliferous limestone that we now know as Rustic Green, or Seagrass Limestone.

Today, when a block of Rustic Green is extracted from the earth and cut open, a snapshot of that ancient world becomes visible once again.

The fossils scattered across its surface are not decorative motifs created by a designer. They are the preserved traces of organisms that lived millions of years before human civilization ever existed.

Every slab is quite literally a fragment of geological history.

And yet perhaps the most remarkable quality of Rustic Green is that this extraordinary appearance is accompanied by equally remarkable physical performance.

A Stone That Cannot Truly Be Recreated

Rustic Green is distinguished by an unusual combination of green, blue-green and earthy mineral tones, crossed by naturally occurring fossil structures and subtle variations created over geological time.

No two blocks are entirely identical.

In the lighter selections, fossils can appear almost suspended within soft green backgrounds. Medium selections introduce cooler blue tones, while Dark Rustic Green/Seagrass Limestone develops a deeper and more dramatic character.

From a distance, the stone can appear calm and architectural.

Up close, an entirely different world reveals itself.

Fossils, shells, movements, transitions and structures that have remained trapped within the stone for millions of years begin to emerge.

It is this tension between monumentality and detail, ancient history and contemporary architecture, that gives Rustic Green its identity.

It can become quietly elegant in a honed interior, deeply sophisticated when polished, or raw and almost ancient primordial or ancestral when flamed, sandblasted or bush-hammered.

For architects and designers seeking materials with a genuine sense of place and permanence, it offers something increasingly rare:

a surface with a story that cannot simply be manufactured.

Ancient Character. Modern Performance.

A natural stone, however, cannot be judged by beauty alone.

For serious architectural applications, the material must also be vetted through measurable properties such as density, water absorption, compressive strength, bending strength, abrasion resistance and resistance to environmental exposure.

Independent laboratory testing of this material provides a strong technical profile.

And this is where the stone becomes particularly interesting.

When its measured properties are compared numerically with the performance thresholds associated with ASTM C568 Classification III High-Density Limestone, Rustic Green demonstrates considerable margins above several of the key benchmark values.

Density

Rustic Green: 2,601 kg/m³
High-density limestone benchmark:
2,560 kg/m³ minimum

Rustic Green measures approximately easily passes the high-density limestone benchmark.

Its density is one of the characteristics behind the substantial, compact nature of the material.

Only 0.812% Water Absorption

Water absorption is one of the most important properties considered when evaluating natural stone, particularly for exterior environments.

Rustic Green recorded atmospheric-pressure water absorption of only:

0.812%

For numerical comparison, the maximum benchmark for ASTM C568 Classification III high-density limestone is 3.0%.

That means Rustic Green's measured water absorption is approximately:

73% BELOW THE MAXIMUM BENCHMARK

In other words, while a high-density limestone may fall within the benchmark at up to 3% absorption, Rustic Green recorded less than one third of that amount.

This low absorption contributes to the material's appeal for demanding architectural environments and helps explain why Rustic Green has been successfully used in a wide range of interior and exterior applications.

117 MPa Compressive Strength

Perhaps even more striking is its strength.

Independent testing recorded a compressive strength of:

117.08 MPa

The minimum numerical benchmark associated with ASTM C568 Classification III high-density limestone is 55 MPa.

Rustic Green's measured compressive strength is therefore approximately:

113% ABOVE THE MINIMUM BENCHMARK

Put more simply, the laboratory result is more than twice the minimum benchmark figure.

This gives Rustic Green a technical character that may be unexpected from a limestone with such intricate fossil patterns and refined coloration.

Behind its beauty is considerable substance.

Strength That Remains After Freezing

The material was also subjected to freezing exposure during laboratory testing.

Its original compressive strength of 117.08 MPa measured 101.44 MPa following the freezing test.

This means Rustic Green retained approximately:

86.6% OF ITS ORIGINAL COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH

Even after freezing exposure, its measured compressive strength remained approximately:

84% ABOVE

the 55 MPa numerical benchmark used for high-density limestone.

The recorded weight reduction following the freezing test was only 0.057%.

For exterior architecture, landscape design and environments exposed to changing seasons, these figures add another important dimension to the material's performance profile.

13.90 MPa Bending Strength

Rustic Green also recorded a laboratory bending strength of:

13.90 MPa

As a numerical point of reference, the ASTM C568 Classification III benchmark for modulus of rupture is 6.9 MPa.

The Rustic Green result is therefore approximately:

101% HIGHER THAN THAT REFERENCE VALUE

Because bending-strength and ASTM modulus-of-rupture testing methodologies are not necessarily identical, this is best understood as a numerical performance comparison rather than a declaration of test-method compliance.

Nevertheless, it provides another indication of the considerable mechanical capability of the stone.

The Chemistry Behind the Stone

The chemical analysis tells the same story from another perspective.

Rustic Green recorded:

CaO: 51.81%
SiO₂: 3.18%
Fe₂O₃: 0.69%
MgO: 0.09%

The high calcium content and exceptionally low magnesium content are characteristic of a predominantly calcitic limestone.

The measured CaO content corresponds stoichiometrically to approximately 92.5% CaCO₃ equivalent, further illustrating the strongly calcium-carbonate-based character of the stone.

But chemistry is only one part of what makes Rustic Green extraordinary.

Nature had millions of years to assemble its composition, fossilation and texture and colour into something that modern manufacturing can imitate aesthetically, but never truly reproduce.

One Stone. Remarkably Different Personalities.

Another of Rustic Green's strengths is its ability to transform dramatically according to surface treatment.

The same geological material can move from refined minimal luxury to rugged landscape architecture simply through the way its surface is finished.

Polished

Deepens the green coloration and brings fossil structures dramatically to life, creating a rich and sophisticated surface for prestigious interiors.

Honed

Produces a softer, quieter and more contemporary interpretation while retaining the natural identity of the material.

Brushed

Introduces tactile depth and an aged, organic character.

Flamed / Flamed & Brushed

Creates a textured surface particularly suited to exterior architecture and landscape applications.

Sandblasted / Sandblasted & Brushed

Produces a softer and lighter architectural texture with excellent visual depth.

Bush-Hammered

Transforms the stone into something almost elemental, emphasising its solidity and natural origin.

Tumbled and Combined Finishes

Allow the stone to move toward traditional, Mediterranean or aged architectural aesthetics.

Few natural materials can change personality so extensively while maintaining such a recognizable identity.

From Luxury Interiors to Monumental Architecture

The combination of aesthetic distinction, high density, low absorption and considerable mechanical strength allows Rustic Green to move far beyond the role of a purely decorative limestone.

Depending on project engineering, finish and specification, it can be considered for applications including:

  • prestigious private residences and villas
  • luxury hotels and hospitality environments
  • commercial interiors
  • feature walls and large architectural surfaces
  • exterior façades
  • flooring
  • staircases
  • landscape architecture
  • terraces and exterior paving
  • pool surroundings
  • public buildings
  • plazas and pedestrian environments
  • vanity tops and custom architectural elements
  • outdoor furniture and custom made stone pieces

It can become a quiet background material or the defining architectural element of an entire project.

In polished form, it can belong in a highly refined luxury interior.

In a textured finish, it can feel completely at home beside water, vegetation, concrete, timber and monumental landscape architecture.

That versatility is one of Rustic Green's greatest strengths.

How Should a Natural Stone Be Vetted?

The appearance of a stone should create the desire to use it.

Its technical properties should provide the confidence to specify it.

When evaluating a material for a project, the question should therefore not only be:

"Do I like this stone?"

It should also be:

"Does this stone possess the physical characteristics required for where I intend to use it?"

For Rustic Green, the laboratory results provide a compelling answer:

2,601 kg/m³ density
0.812% water absorption
117.08 MPa compressive strength
13.90 MPa bending strength
101.44 MPa compressive strength after freezing

Measured against commonly referenced high-density limestone benchmarks, the numbers are striking:

≈73% better than the maximum water-absorption benchmark

≈113% above the minimum compressive-strength benchmark

≈101% above the modulus-of-rupture benchmark as a numerical reference

≈84% above the compressive-strength benchmark even after freezing exposure

These are not aesthetic claims.

They are measurable physical properties.

Benchmark comparisons are numerical references to ASTM C568 Classification III High-Density Limestone requirements. Individual laboratory methodologies may differ from the ASTM test methods, so the comparisons should not be interpreted as declarations of ASTM certification.

More Than a Surface

Rustic Green/Seagrass limestone is an has many things to claims to make to those who would appreciate it.

Its fossils speak about time.

Its colour speaks about nature.

Its physical characteristics speak about capability.

And architecture gives all three life once again.

A marine organism existed in an ancient sea more than 20 million years ago.

Its remains settled onto the seabed.

Sediments accumulated above it.

Millions of years of geological processes compressed and consolidated those layers into limestone.

The sea disappeared.

Land rose.

Civilizations came and went.

And today, that same fragment of geological history that should have belonged to a museum can become a wall, a floor, a façade, a staircase, a landscape or the defining surface of a contemporary building.

From an ancient sea to modern architecture, Rustic Green carries 20–25 million years of history within every piece.

At HP Marble, as the quarry and factory owner of HP Rustic Green / Seagrass Limestone, we are honoured to oversee and to control the process of this material from extraction and selection through processing and finished production, allowing its natural character to be translated into consistent architectural solutions for applications around the world.

Because some materials are chosen simply to cover a surface.

Others become a sublime part of the architecture itself.
